The History of the Jeep

The Jeep has been an iconic figure in the motoring world. Seriously, no other off-road vehicle is as popular and widely loved as the Jeep. With so much appeal inside that off-road monster, the Jeep has its history deeply entrenched into the core of American patriotism.

In’40, three motoring companies were tapped to create a transport utility vehicle that will primarily serve the US Army: American Bantam Car Company, Ford Motor Company, and Willys-Overland. The primary objective of the project was to build a vehicle that can traverse certain terrains without compromising its durability. Willys-Overland got the contract but with their limited resources, the US Army soon requested Ford Company to build the vehicles using Willys-Overland design.

The finsihed Jeep was designated as GPW by Ford with G standing for government, P in reference to the 80 inch wheelbase, and W for the Willys-Overland car design. Thousand off Jeep were put into service during teh war ans some even went to serve the Russians and the British under the lend-lease program. Serving as a multi-purpose vehicle, the Jeep can be utilized as a communications vehicle or a when fitted with a .50 cal machine gun, can become a light attack vehicle.

With Allied victory in the World War II, the Jeep became a symbol for freedom and victory. Photographs of infantry and their superiors posing with the Jeep helped raised the vehicle’s popularity to an even higher heights. Pictures of Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, and MacArthur who posed with the Jeeps also helped in promoting the Jeep’s status as the “in” vehicle.

By the time war was over, Jeep was already a household name. Capitalizing on the free publicity it got in the war, Willys-Overland began to manufacture civilian Jeeps. The public’s general reaction was significantly positive. The Jeep went on to become one of the best “selling” vehicles of all time.

As years passed by, the Jeep evolved little by little. Tweaks were made, both minor and major. But the one thing that did not undergo surgical change was the Jeeps familiar look.

Today, the Jeep enjoys a large fan base comprised of people from diverse backgrounds. With such following, it is highly unlikely that the production of the all Jeeps and the most popular model, Jeep Wrangler, will totally halt. Asked why many people are so hooked to this vehicle, the only constant answer will be, “It’s a Jeep thing; you wouldn’t understand.
