As previously mentioned there are plenty of places that will provide you an opportunity to locate a cheap motorcycle. Along with your newspaper there are several trade magazines that have tons of great deals on reduced price motorcycles.
Of course, the first place that many people begin their search for cheap motorcycles is at the nearest motorcycle shop. There are many advantages to visiting your local shop. Not only will you be able t get a first-hand look at the motorcycles they are offering, but you can also learn quite a bit more about which type of motorcycle might be best for you.
As with the purchase of any used vehicle you need to make sure that you are getting a cheap motorcycle that is in good quality. If you have to put out a large amount on money on repairs right of the bat then the cheap motorcycle wasn’t really that cheap anyway, was it. Look for bikes that have lower mileage and when inspecting the bike make sure that you look carefully at the bike for anything that doesn’t seem right. Mismatched paint or deals, different styles on the chrome or items which don’t generally get worn easily that appear to be much newer than the age of the bike itself. These are all indicators that the machine may have been recently repaired from damage or failure.
As a general rule a bike that has been damaged and is now being sold is going to be cleaned up as best as it can to try to cover the accident. If you know where to look you will not be fooled. Check the handle bar grips as these are the first thing that hits the ground in a fall, also stand back and crouch down to look at the handle bars from a low rear position, are they evenly straight or is one side bent indicating that the bike weight has been thrown onto it. Also look at the engine the frame and the oil cap as these are great tell-tale markers of a bike condition. Ask to test ride the bike around the block five or six times, a reputable owner should have no problem letting you put a mile or so onto the machine, if they balk, you need to walk.
Check the chain to make sure its in good repair and look for signs of unusual wear and tear that might indicate that it hasn’t been kept well oiled. Someone who neglects their chain isn’t likely to pay attention to other less important component of the bike either. Also carefully consider the mileage shown with the amount of wear and tear the bike shows in general. Older machines had odometers which were easy to manipulate. If the odometer reads low and the bike looks like its been ridden through a war zone, their might be a problem. Even if the owner claims the bike was only ridden by their dad to church on Sunday, the truth is the owner probably rode it to Canada and back a few times. If the story they tell doesn’t add up to the mileage or the bike condition then walk away.
Now that you have done a complete once over it is time for you to seal the deal and make sure that you are buying the motorcycle that you truly want and are not just taking the first cheap thing that you see.
When it comes down to it owning a used motorcycle may be the end point of the journey but finding the one thats best for you is the beginning of a long fun road you will go down with your bike. The time you spend finding the perfect bike can be as much fun as the time you spend riding it. Enjoy the journey to ownership, and definitely enjoy the journeys ahead in ownership.
